Pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP), also known as pulmonary alveolar phospholipoproteinosis, is a diffuse lung disease characterized by the accumulation of amorphous, periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)-positive lipoproteinaceous material in the distal air spaces. Treatment of PAP depends on the form of PAP and age of a patient with PAP and severity of the disease. WLL is a standard treatment for PAP and the only treatment which has shown improved symptoms and oxygenation in patients. Another treatment of PAP includes using recombinant granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) which is given by nose or with a subcutaneous injection which is not approved yet.
